Yana Zixuan Yan (Mo Do Shou)

Dr. Yana (Zixuan) Yan is a passionate performer and educator who has given numerous concerts as a soloist and chamber musician across the country. An award-winning flutist, Yana has performed throughout the United States, including MacPhail Center, Adrienne Arsht Center, Cornad prebys Music Center, and as a presenter at National Flute Association, Upper Midwest Flute Association, San Diego Flute Guild, and Florida Flute Association.

As a soloist, she performed Melinda Wagner Flute Concerto which received the Pulitzer Prize for the composition in 1999 with the Frost Repertory Orchestra and Carl Nielsen Flute Concerto with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) symphony orchestra. Her interest also includes the new music. She completed her D.M.A. in 2022 with her research paper and lecture-recital, “A Performance Guide to George Lewis’s Emergent for Interactive Electronics.” She also masters baroque flute and performed works of Jean Leclair, Pierre Danican Philidor, Michel Blavet George Philipp Telemann and François Couperin in 2021with the Frost Baroque Ensemble and the UNLV Baroque Ensemble during 2019-2021.

As an educator, Yana taught at Augustana College and Black Hawk College, IL as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Flute, and she was a Flute Instructor at Quad City Symphony. She was recognized as a successful director of the Augustana Flute Choir and recruited highly qualified flute students to the college. She has worked closely with K12 school music directors and local youth orchestras and has given frequent master classes to high schools and colleges.

She earned her Bachelor of Music with Double Major in Flute and Piano from Wuhan Conservatory of Music in China, and Master of Music from University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Miami, Frost School of Music. Before joining Frost, she spent one year in Artist Diploma at the Hartt School, University of Hartford, and her principal teachers include Jennifer Grim, Immanuel Davis, Janet Arms, Ling Yan, and Lan Wang.
