The premiere of Dokkaebi at Beethoven-Haus, Bonn. Dokkaebi springs from my interest in connecting with the backgrounds of the performers who I compose for. In this case two amazing virtuosos, one from Korea and the other from Germany (and specifically the hometown of Beethoven). Sohee Kwon and Felix Olschofka.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\u00a0Over the past 10 years, I\u2019ve become fascinated with Korean mythology and have composed several pieces for their traditional instruments, a non-Korean view of how this looks through the lens of an American. We live in a multicultural world, so celebrating each other\u2019s cultures and mingling them in ways that are unique to each of us is, to me, a way of embracing an all encompassing worldview.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Dokkaebi are Korean goblins, mischievous, lighthearted and humanitarian. Benevolent pranksters. And the Dokkaebi theme continually lurks beneath the surface poking up in between the different themes and tickling their toes – an undercurrent of fun and mischief beneath the seriousness of the world.
And swimming up in that world is the theme of one of Beethoven\u2019s most beloved works, can you find it?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
